1. Make sure your gear is clean and in good repair. If you need some help, stop in to your favorite archery store and have them help. If your gear doesn't work right, you are a risk to the animals and to yourself. While you are tuning up your bow, be sure you have everything else you need to be safe in the backcountry.
2. Practice, practice, practice. Making a clean shot is a critical component of ethical hunting. Know the kill zone of your target animal and practice making the shot. If you don't have a local archery range, find a safe spot to hone your archery skills in your backyard or nearby. If you are ever near the Jack Creek Preserve during July and August, give our 3D archery range a try.
3. Get in good physical shape. Trekking through the backcountry is strenuous work. Be sure you are in good physical shape before you head out. When possible, it's always safest to go with a companion.
4. Check the regulations and plan your trips. Remember regulations can change every year, as do season dates, and hunting district boundaries. Be sure you know when and where you can hunt.

Hunting is a culturally important pastime that allows many people to deepen their appreciation and understanding of the land. As well-stated by our partners, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, it is our belief that hunting can foster a deep love and respect for the land, the wildlife it supports, and the outdoor experience. We believe that honest, ethical hunting for free-ranging animals kindles vitality in the individual hunter, deepens appreciation of wildlife and wildlands, and strengthens society as a whole.
To promote these beliefs, we share them through many of our K-12 and Higher Ed programs. We also offer hunting experiences to the community in several different ways.
