Winter Survival Skills

Winter is beautiful and extreme! Many of us enjoy recreating outside during this season which can bring unique situations that may require special winter skills. Join us for a workshop that will help you feel prepared for the less-than-ideal situations while having fun in the snow!

Whether you are into backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, or just drive in winter conditions this workshop will cover skills that may be lifesaving! Learn about types of snow, snow stability, snow shelters, winter fire building, winter specific first aid, and meet new people!

IN THIS WORKSHOP:

  • Learn how to build a snow shelter to maximize warmth.

  • Build a fire in the snow!

  • Learn how to recognize and do first aid for common winter injuries such as fractures, hypothermia, frost bite, and minor scrapes.

  • Learn more about snow stability and structure while having fun and being outside!

DETAILS:

  • Date: March 14, 2026, 10:30AM to 3PM

  • Meet at Jack Creek Preserve’s Outdoor Education Center (OEC)

  • Cost: $40 per person

  • There will be an indoor classroom part of the workshop and a field portion.

  • Bring your own lunch, water, snacks, and winter gear.

  • Snowshoes will be provided if needed, or you can bring your own. We will stay close to the OEC and cover 0.5-1 mile. 

  • We are capping the event at 20 people.

About the instructor, Dr. Maura Davenport: Dr. Maura Davenport, MD
Maura is a Family Medicine Physician who has been working in medicine for over 20 years in a variety of capacities including EMS and search and rescue. She is currently working at Madison Valley Medical Center as a full spectrum family medicine doctor, chief of staff and medical director for the Madison Valley Ambulance Service. Her love of wilderness medicine combines her passion for medicine and love of the outdoors. Maura’s goal is to share her knowledge and skills with as many people as possible to ensure that people are safe and confident as they venture into the great outdoors.
